St Ambrose barring Theodosius from Milan Cathedral
Depicted is the moment Saint Ambrose bans the Emperor Theodosius from Milan Cathedral after his massacre of the people of Thessalonica. Probably by Van Dyck, it is a version of a larger work painted in Rubens's studio around 1618. It may well have been painted for Nicolaes Rockox, who is almost certainly included as the second figure from the right.
