The Birth of the Virgin
This portable altarpiece was made in Siena for private devotion. The newly born Virgin Mary is about to be washed, accentuating her humility and purity. The folding side panels extend the narrative: a small boy informs Saint Joachim of the news and servants prepare food for Saint Anne, the Virgin's mother.
