Saint Francis before the Pope: The Granting of the Indulgence of the Portiuncula and the Stigmatisation of Saint Francis
Saint Francis kneels before Pope Honorius III who is granting an indulgence to whoever visits the chapel of the Portiuncula in Santa Maria degli Angeli, near Assisi, on 1/2 August. Present in the papal court are Francis's companion friars in their habits, and cardinals dressed in red and in purple.
Saint Francis receives the stigmata - the marks of Christ's wounds - from a winged seraph in the sky. Brother Leo accompanies the saint. The event took place in 1224 at La Verna in Tuscany.
