A Poulterer's Shop
A native of Leiden, Dou popularised so called 'niche paintings' in which an interior is seen through a window. Details such as the reflections in the bucket, the poultry's plucked skin, and the hare's fur exemplify his highly finished style, which he perfected after training in Rembrandt's studio. It made Dou one of the most successful of all 17th-century Dutch painters.
