The Annunciation

The Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that, through the medium of the Holy Spirit, she will bear the son of God. The Holy Spirit, represented as a dove, hovers over Mary as she joyfully accepts the message (Luke 1: 26-38). According to the inscription this work was painted during the pontificate of Pope Alexander VII.
