The Painter's Daughters chasing a Butterfly

This is the earliest of six known double portraits by Gainsborough of his two daughters. Mary, in yellow, is aged about six; Margaret is about four or five. The children's attempts to grasp the butterfly suggest the impermanence of childhood. The painting is unfinished.
