Bildnis einer Frau

Ein von Fantins Frau geführtes Notizbuch soll die Umstände dieses Bildes schildern. Die Dargestellte nannte sich Mme Leroy, ein Name, von dem die Künstlerin vermutete, dass er falsch war; und sie bestand darauf, ihr Porträt im Voraus zu bezahlen. Zu einigen ihrer Sitzungen wurde sie von einem Amerikaner namens Becker begleitet, der bei Fantin auch ein im folgenden Jahr datiertes Bildnis von sich selbst in Auftrag gab (Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Mass.). Die vollständige Identität des Paares und die Art ihrer Beziehung sind weiterhin unbekannt.

A notebook kept by Fantin's wife is said to recond the circumstances surrounding this picture. The sitter called herself Mme Leroy, a name the artist suspected was false; and she insisted on paying for her portrait in advance. She was accompanied to some of her sittings by an American named Becker, who also commissioned a likeness of himself from Fantin, dated the following year (Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Mass.). The couple's full identities, and the nature of their relationship, remain unknown.
