Johannes der Täufer predigt in der Wüste

Annibale begründete die Mode für Landschaften, in denen die Natur durch die Vorstellungskraft in einen idyllischen Schauplatz für religiöse oder mythologische Geschichten verwandelt wird. Das Thema dieses Bildes basiert auf dem Johannesevangelium: „Am nächsten Tag sah Johannes [der Täufer] Jesus zu sich kommen und sprach: Siehe, das Lamm Gottes, das die Sünde der Welt trägt.“ Das Ereignis ging der Taufe Jesu durch Johannes voraus. Dieses wunderschön erhaltene Werk wurde 1678 in der Sammlung der Familie Farnese in Parma beschrieben und war später Teil der Orléans-Sammlung in Paris.

Annibale launched the vogue for landscapes in which nature is transformed by the imagination into an idyllic setting for religious or mythological stories. The subject of this picture is based on the Gospel of John: "The next day John [the Baptist] seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." The event preceded the baptism of Jesus by John. This beautifully preserved work was described in 1678 in the collection of the Farnese family in Parma and was later part of the Orléans collection in Paris.
