Bildnisdiptychon des Ehepaars Hans (1486--1544) und Barbara Straub (1501--1560)

Hans Straub (1486-1544) arbeitete als Kaufmann in Nürnberg. Seine Frau (1501-1560) war die Tochter des Nürnberger Humanisten Willibald Pirckheimer (1470 1530). Ihr Halsschmuck vereint die Wappenfiguren ihrer Eltern. Das Diptychon diente als Dokument der Familiengeschichte ebenso wie der Standesrepräsentation. Es konnte zusammengeklappt werden. Seine Rückseite ist mit dem Wappen der Eheleute bemalt. Diptychen dieser Art waren nicht für die Wand vorgesehen, sondern wurden meist geschlossen aufbewahrt.

Hans Straub (1486-1544) worked as a merchant in Nuremberg. His wife (1501-1560) was the daughter of the Nuremberg Humanist Willibald Pirckheimer (1470 1530). Her necklace combines the heraldic figures of her parents. The diptych served to document the family's history as well as to reflect the standing of the sitters in society. It could be folded together. The reverse side is painted with the couple's coat of arms. Such diptychs were not intended to be hung on the wall but were usually kept closed.
