The Sack of Troy
This cabinet picture, rich in detail, was created soon after the artist's arrival in Rome. It is evidence of how Adam Elsheimer orientated his work on the Flemish tradition of painting fires in a landscape against a night sky, such as in the case of Jan Brueghel the Elder. Such works enjoyed considerable popularity among collectors in Rome.
