Die Entkleidung Christi

Dem apokryphen Nikodemusevangelium zufolge wurde Christus vor der Kreuzigung entkleidet. Das seltene Thema bearbeitete El Greco in einem berühmten Altarbild für die Sakristei der Kathedrale von Toledo. Die Münchner Version wiederholt die Komposition in kleine rem Format, zeigt jedoch in einigen Details, im Kolorit und in den Proportionen der Figuren Abweichungen. Sie gilt als authentische Replik, an der die Werkstatt Anteil hatte. Die Erwerbung des Gemäldes 1909 durch den Museumsdirektor Hugo von Tschudi spiegelt die El-Greco-Begeisterung der frühen Moderne.

The Disrobing of Christ

According to the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus, Christ was disrobed before the crucifixion. El Greco depicted this rare subject in a famous altarpiece for the sacristy in Toledo Cathedral. The com position of the Munich version is largely the same, albeit in a smaller format. However, some details, the colouration and the proportions of the figures are different. It is considered an authentic replica that was also worked on by the artist's workshop. The painting's acquisition in 1909 by the museum's director, Hugo von Tschudi, reflects the enthusiasm for El Greco in the early Modernist period.
